President's Summer Message
The golf season is here. We have several events planned for our Chapter.
June 28th is our outing at Oak Hills Golf Course in Norwalk, CT. Noted
for its superb tees and greens, Oak Hills is an 18 hole public golf course
nestled in a park-like setting in Norwalk, CT. The course is a par 71
regulation course designed by architect Alfred Tull. The creative layout
of the course starts out narrow on the 1st 7 holes, opens up on holes
9-12 then tightens up again on holes 13-18. The 144 acre course opened
in 1969 and since then has evolved into one of the most beautifully maintained
courses in Connecticut.
August 2nd we are planning a golf challenge with the New Haven Ski Club.
The event will be held at Laurel View Golf Course in Hamden, CT. The golf
course at Laurel View Country Club was built in 1969. The golf course is
a Jeffrey Cornish design and features eighteen golf holes carved out of the
Connecticut landscape. There are four sets of tees to play from and the golf
course measures almost 7000 yards from the championship tees. The golf course
is designed to be played in a maximum of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
We will be having our annual Rally for the Cure event. Save August 17th for
the event. We would like to ask if anyone has any contacts for donations
of prizes, please let me know. Please email me at kathyb8@optonline.net.
This event was a huge success last year. We would like to exceed last year
if possible. It is a really good cause.
June 1st, June 8th and June 22nd we have tee times at the Orchards Golf Course
in Milford, CT. This is an executive course. It is a great place for beginners
to come out and get some practice. It is also a great place to tune up your
short game for the more advanced golfers. Everyone always has a good time
at the Orchards. Bring your pull cart for this course. A little exercise,
some nice people, and a bite to eat makes for a wonderful Sunday afternoon.
Hope you can make it. Please contact Mary Hudson at hudsonma@optonline.net
by Thursday if you are planning to attend. In the event of rain or uncertain
weather, please contact the Orchards by 11:00 to see if the event has been
cancelled. The phone number is 203-877-8200.
Sterling Farms Golf Course in Stamford CT was our kick off event for the
season. Sterling Farms is an 18 hole public golf facility laid out over 144
acres of a once active dairy farm. Originally designed by Architect Geoffrey
Cornish in 1969 and renovated by Architect Robert McNeill in 2005, the par
72 golf course opened in 1972. The golf courses rolling terrain guides you
through the picturesque farm buildings and challenging holes, including its
difficult par 3’s, which demand distance, accuracy and good putting
to score well. Sterling Farms is noted for its meticulous condition, layout,
heated driving range and amenities. Everyone had a good time. The longest
Drive was won by . The 50/50 raffle was won by Elliott Whitney. Congratulations!!
Thank you to Tom Maniscalco and Betty Yu for selling all those raffle tickets.
Our Third Friday event is held at Sterling Farms on June 20th. Come hit some
balls at the driving range starting around 6:00. Then we go over to Player’s
Club for drinks and dinner. We will be having a short game golf clinic on
July 18th at Sterling Farms. We have 8 slots available. The cost is $20.
Please mail your check in advance to Kathy Blackall, 685 Valley Road, Fairfield,
CT 06825. We will meet for dinner after the clinic. The driving range is
open for anyone that does not want to participate in the golf clinic.
No First Friday in July due to the holiday weekend.
On May 17th our event
at Tashua Knolls in Trumbull CT was a huge success. Tashua Knolls is a
27 hole facility
which features an original par 72 golf course stretching 6,500 yards from
the championship tees that is sure to challenge even the best golfer. The
original 18 hole layout was built in 1976 by golf architect Al Zikorus,
the course is situated on picturesque farmland originally inhabited by
the Tamtashu Indians and later the Mallet family of Trumbull. Joan Sheehy
highlighted the day with a birdie. Congratulations Joan!!! Can you teach
me how to do that? The closest to the pin contest was won by Chris D’Andrea
and Paul Howard. Congratulations Chris and Paul! The longest drive was
won by Betty Yu and Bill Reilly. Congratulations to Betty and Bill. It
was a beautiful day. The Tashua fox greeted our foursome at the 3rd hole.
He made my heart beat a little faster, but did not bother us. A family
of deer greeted us on the back nine. Isn’t is great to be outside
with the trees, birds, fox, deer and some really nice people?? What more
could you ask for?? A great game!!
After golf we congregated in the grill room to have a bite to eat and watch the
Preakness Horse Race. We put a little wager on the race and had some fun with
horse trading. Of course, Big Brown ran away with the race and Dan Jacobs won
the pot. Congratulations Dan! All in all we had several laughs and some really
good golf.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next event.
